NOTES
The musical tradition of the paniolo in Hawai`i spans almost two hundred years from the first slack key music of the early 1800s, and it is still going strong today. Dagan Bernstein maintains these traditions with his Hawaiian Country music album “Paniolo Music”. This collection of eleven original songs tells stories of heartbreak and redemption with the traditional Hawaiian instrumentation of acoustic guitar, lap steel, `ukulele and his smooth baritone vocals.

Dagan possesses a steadfast commitment to preserving the musical traditions of the paniolo, yet pushes it forward with his original compositions that place the individual’s life experience at the center of the songs. Cascade Love tells the story of a long lost love, while Let the Music Play is a tribute to his idol Johnny Cash. “Paniolo Music” is a platform for Dagan’s skills as songwriter, singer and multi-instrumentalist.

Yet there is more than just sad tales of broken love: Couldn’t Turn Him Away speaks of receiving the love of God when it is offered to you, He Can’t Suffer Fools takes you through the trials of a man driven by his ego and As the Moon Rises Over the Sea is an uplifting jazzy tune about confessing your love under the Hawaiian moonlight.

While most of the songs are centered around the acoustic guitar and vocals, Dagan develops layered instrumentation with lead `ukulele solos and the subtle slide of Resophonic and Weissenborn guitars. In addition, guest musician Chris Shaffer’s background vocals and stand up bass provides depth and a relaxed easy going groove.

“Paniolo Music” is Dagan’s first full length album of original music. It is a culmination of his experiences through life’s ups and downs that has given the compositions an authenticity and intimacy. These are real stories of lost romance, new relationships, memories of past loves, spiritual redemption and a deep trust in God through life’s trials and tribulations. It is an album that takes you into the experience of the paniolo, musically and emotionally, as the lonesome cowboy rides on through the green hills of Waimea.
